Moving

First off, you should figure out which region of Baltimore you'd like to live in. (Refer to the Baltimore portion of the site -- specifically the Neighborhoods section.)

Secondly, figure out what type of housing you'd like. You can also check out the Housing Ads to see if anyone currently in Baltimore (and possibly part of JHU) is looking for roommates.

Thirdly, try to come a week or so before classes start, so that you can buy furniture, get to know the city, and figure out where to snag food. Or come a bit earlier, and do a summer rotation. (More info on choosing a rotation can be found on the "Rotations" page.)

What to Consider When You're Looking for Places

A few questions to ask yourself:
  • Neighborhood
    • Check out the Neighborhoods page for websites and student opinions on where to live.
  • Rent
    • Is it in your price range? Ask about student discounts. Some places will also pay for your utilities.
  • Parking
    • Do you want to keep your car in a covered garage, or are you fine w/ on-street parking? How will you get to campus?
  • Washer/Dryer
    • Some buildings have a laundry room in the basement. Some apartments have washers/dryers in the units themselves. Some have nothing at all. Make sure you know what you're getting into.
  • Roommates
    • Do you want a 1BR or 3BR? How about sharing a bathroom? Ask your fellow classmates about splitting rent for an apartment.
Many BME students live around Charles Village, in The Broadview, Hopkins House, Uni One, The Marylander, Cresmont Lofts, and townhouses in that area. In Fells Point, Canton, or the Inner Harbor, most students live in townhomes or high-rise apartments. If you're interested in a particular area, please email the PhD Council Presidents. They probably know someone living in a particular area, and they can recommend whom to ask about which places. Current renters can also sometimes get a referral discount.
