Like any city, Baltimore has pockets of "good areas" and "not-so-good areas." You can find "Likes" and "Dislikes" List below, containing student input about each region. LiveBaltimore has a pretty good listing of the various neighborhoods. If you're looking for housing, check out the housing ads. Several grad students are probably looking for roommates. You can also search for rental information on the Baltimore.Apartments website. Many BME students live around Charles Village, in The Broadview, Hopkins House, Uni One, The Marylander, Cresmont Lofts, and townhouses in that area. In Fells Point, Canton, or the Inner Harbor, most students live in townhomes or high-rise apartments. If you're interested in a particular neighborhood, please email the PhD Council Presidents. They probably know someone living in a particular area, and they can recommend whom to ask about which places. Current renters can also sometimes get a referral discount. Summary of NeighborhoodsStudents mainly live in the following places:Charles VillageThe area around Homewood campus, where many undergrads and grad students live.Reed HallThe dormitory on the medical campus (many international students choose to live here their first year; not the cleanest/best of living arrangements, but very convenient, and a good stopping ground while you get to know the city).Mt. VernonThe area to the south of Homewood and to the west of JHMI; the shuttle stops here on its way between the campuses.Fells PointThe area to the south of JHMI, located pretty close to the water and home to many quirky bars and restaurants.CantonThe area to the southeast of JHMI, with a Safeway grocery store, a square with many Irish bars and cute restaurants, where many of the med students rent townhomes.Patterson ParkNeighborhood Southeast of JHMI. Still walkable to the JHMI campus, but will probably get more room for your money than in Fells or Canton. The summer finds concerts, movies, and sports leagues in the park.
Inner HarborThe area to the south of JHMI, with Whole Foods, the Landmark Theatre, gourmet restaurants, and the touristy spots.Federal HillThe area to the southwest of JHMI, with many dancing/dive bars; it's close to 295 and 95, so people who work outside of Baltimore have easy access to the roads.Mt. WashingtonThe area to the northwest of Homewood, accessible by only car, but usually cheaper and roomier.White MarshThe area to the northeast of Baltimore, with the IKEA and various suburbs-oriented stores.ColumbiaA suburb that's between Baltimore and DC, for students/professors whose partners or roommates need to work in either or both cities.Where Students Live: Likes & DislikesCompiled from graduate student input: |
