See below for suggestions on where to go and what to do in the wild outdoors.
Around the City
Outdoor Concerts
- Baltimore Outdoor Concerts: Baltimore itself has many outdoor concerts, including some on the first Thursdays of each summer month, or music at Artscape in July.
- Summer Nights with the BSO: The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra plays throughout Baltimore, from their collaboration with Queen at the Pier 6 Pavilion to playing John Williams at Oregon Ridge State Park.
Outdoor Movies
Baltimore has many places that show free movies throughout the summer. To see the schedule for Outdoor Movies, look at the schedule on baltimore.about.com. In particular, students go to Little Italy, Fells Point, The American Visionary Art Museum, and the Homewood Campus.
Pools and Gyms
Biomedical Engineering students get access to the gyms on both the medical campus (The Cooley Center) and the Homewood campus (The Ralph O'Connor Recreation Center). Both have pools. There are also several gyms throughout Baltimore, like the MAC Athletic Center in the Inner Harbor or the Merritt Athletic Center in Canton, which have gyms and pools.

Outside the City
Beaches
Most people in Baltimore tend to go to places along the Atlantic Ocean or near the Chesapeake Bay. Here's a list of beaches:
- Bethany Beach, Delaware
- Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
- Ocean City, Maryland
- Virginia Beach, Virginia
- Outer Banks, North Carolina
Camping
- Shenandoah National Park is a popular place for many BMEs. It's only about three hours away, and has some amazing scenery and hiking.
Hiking
- Gunpowder Falls: Located north of Baltimore and relatively close to the city, you can go hiking or swimming here all-year-round. For example, the "Pot Rocks" on the Lost Pond Trail is a fun swimming hole.
- Patapsco Valley State Park - Located 25 minutes outside of Baltimore.
- Loch Raven is also recommended for hiking.
- Shenandoah National Park is a popular place for many BMEs. It's only about three hours away, and has some amazing scenery, hiking, and camping spots.
Water Sports
Canoeing
Sailing
- The Downtown Sailing Center: Located in the Inner Harbor, students can take classes, learn how to sail boats, and/or become skippers. Students and faculty interested in more information about the Downtown Sailing Center and sailing in and around Baltimore in general should feel free to contact Larry Schramm.
Tubing
- Monkton Road: Located off Exit 27 on 83, you can rent their tubes ($23 for extremely durable ones) or take your own ($2-$7 from Wal-Mart for cheap and perhaps poppable ones). It's a 15-minute hike up, and about an hour's worth of relaxing ride down the river.
White Water Rafting
One of our students, Hannah Carter, has worked as a white water rafting guide in West Virginia. She arranges a BME White Water / Camping trip every year.
