Religion

If you practice a particular religion and are looking for a place to worship, here are some good places to start.

Christian

A list of Churches in Baltimore shows that Baltimore has quite a few of these religious buildings. A few of our students have attended the following places:

Baptist

  • Ba Cheng Church: In the basement of the University Baptist Church, located on Homewood, is this Chinese church, which consists primarily of people from mainland China and Taiwan. The services are bilingual, with an interpreter. A stairway leads down to the entrance of the Chinese Church, which is on the Greenway.
  • The University Baptist Church: This church is on Homewood campus, across the street from the library.

Catholic

  • The Catholic Community at Hopkins: Many of the graduate students attend mass at the Bunting-Meyerhoff Interfaith Center, located on 2941 N. Charles St. intersecting with University St. next to Homewood campus. Father Ryan gives amazing homilies that are practical, usually geared towards students and encompassing several intellectual allusions. During the summer, however, there are no Catholic masses, because Father Ryan takes theology classes in New York.
  • St. Philip & James Rectory: Located at the intersection of 29th and Charles St., many students who live near Homewood also attend mass at this church.
  • St. Ignatius: Located in Mt. Vernon, this beautiful church has a choral mass at 10:30am, and hosts the city's radio mass at 9:30am. Founded by the Jesuits in 1856, priests here tend to have insightful homilies, with the masses followed by coffee, cake, and conversation.
  • MassTimes.Org lists many churches, sorting by area or time of mass. It's a good place to start if you'd like to just explore the area at a particular time.
