Useful Places

When you're looking for something, where can you find it?

Hopkins Tips

Parking

Grad students get free parking in any garage on the JHMI campus after 4:00p, and all day Saturday and Sunday (till 7am on Monday). There's also free satellite parking lots located on Fallsway (near Scores) or Monument St. If you want parking in a garage, then ask to be put on the GSA subsidized parking list and pay $50/month. Other parking rates are available on Homewood campus. If you TA, then you get a free parking pass in the South Garage (the new Mason Hall building underground garage). Ask Gayle in the Clark Hall BME Office (Rm 319) about those parking passes. Information on how to get a subsidized parking spot or satellite spot can be found on the GSA website.

Food

You can find reviews and lists of places to eat on the Restaurants page. If you're looking around the campuses, you can try:

Near Homewood, there are plenty of restaurants on St. Paul Street (Chipotle's, Sam's Bagels, etc), and some dining halls on campus (Levering Hall has a cafeteria and a coffeeshop).

At JHMI, there are plenty of food carts. The Main Hospital Building and the Outpatient Center (JHOC) have a cafeteria, along with Flamers, Subway, Roman Pizza, and Einstein's Bagels. You can also eat at Burger King, ABC Sushi, Taste of China, Hot Mustard, or plenty of booths at The Market.

Delivery Food

When you don't feel like cooking, fetchfood.com and campusfood.com can be your best friends. Both offer many restaurants with delivery and carryout with everything from Chinese, pizza and wings, and Chicken Tikka Masala. The typical pizza chains Papa JohnsDomino's, and Pizza Bolis also service the area. Ming Garden is a pretty good Chinese delivery place.

Groceries

Homewood

Near Homewood, there's a Safeway on the corner of 25th and St. Paul. On 31st and St. Paul, there is an Eddie's Market that also has very good deli sandwiches (till 9pm during the week). There's also a Giant on 33rd.  On 41st street, there is a Giant in a building called the Rotunda which also has a movie theater and a 24-hour Rite Aid Pharmacy.  A 24-hour Superfresh is a little farther down 41st.  An on-call escort van can take you to any of these shops between 5pm and 3am by calling 410-516-8700. If you do not own a car, Safeway does deliver groceries.

Mt. Vernon

There's a Superfresh on Charles St. (and Saratoga) near the Charles Towers plaza. Also, just north of the Washington Monument is another Eddie's Market on Eager St.

Downtown

There's a Safeway on Boston Street, and a Whole Foods near Aliceanna and S. President Street. Aldi and Santoni's are good for cheap produce and staples between the JHMI and Bayview campuses.

Around the City

A Trader Joe's can be found in Towson for great staples, prepared, and organic food at a lower cost than Whole Foods.

Farmer's Markets

Fresh breads, meats, dairy, and produce can be purchased at local Farmers' markets (most have the same vendors). This list of Farmer's Markets in Maryland shows many of the locations and selections throughout the county. Some of the places that students have explored include:
  • Downtown Market.  Under 83.  407 E Saratoga St.  Sundays 8-noon.  Summer. Lots of Street food, including made-before-your-eyes doughnuts, popcorn, crepes, omelets, mushroom sandwiches, and burgers.  Lots of herbs, plants, and cut flowers for sale too.
  • Waverly Market.  Near Homewood campus.  400 E 32nd St.  Open year round from 7am-noon on Saturdays.  Most of the above with less hot food.
  • JHMI Market.  Thursdays from 10am to 2pm beside the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center. Fruits, veggies, etc.
  • Weekend Market. Located on Lancaster Street, between Central Avenue and Exeter, on Saturdays from 9a - 1p and Sundays from 8a - 12noon.

Asian Groceries

  • H-Mart: The store offering the widest selection of Asian foods, along with fresh veggies/fruits and swimmingly fresh seafood, is H-Mart, also known as Hanahreum Mart. This is about 20-40minutes driving distance away from Baltimore.
  • Kam Sam: This store in Rockville has a good Chinese selection, with yummy chia-siu (chia-siao) and bubble tea.
  • Maxim: This store in Rockville also has a good Chinese selection. This store and Kam Sam are quite small, but chock-full of Asian groceries.
  • Chowhound also has a list of recommendations in the Rockville/DC area.

Furniture

  • Baltimore Craigslist: This free site allows anyone to post their ads; simply respond to the person who posted the ad, and you might be able to coordinate a pick-up. Depending on the quality of the goods, these can sell from $5 to $500.
  • IKEA: This Sweden-based company sells trendy-but-cheap furniture, which you then take home and assemble yourself. The closest store is in White Marsh, with a slightly bigger store in College Park.
  • Other stores: Towson has a Target, a Wal-Mart, and a Super K-Mart. A Home Depot is located near Exit 59 on I-95 to Eastern Avenue.

Shopping

While Baltimore has less strip malls and more small shops in each neighborhood, there is a touristy mall in the Inner Harbor. For the typical mall experience (with parking!) you have to leave the city. Towson is reaching to be an upscale mall north of the city. Towson can be reached by the Collegetown Shuttle from the Homewood campus. If you want a huge outlet mall, try Arundel Mills Mall to the south. Columbia, southwest of Baltimore, also features many aspects of suburbia, including a Target, WalMart, the Columbia Town Centre Mall, etc. White Marsh, northeast of Baltimore, has a Mall and "The Avenue," which has more chain restaurants, shops, and a movie theater.
