Sports

Sports are a good way for many of our students to maintain a physical and mental balance. Participating in sporting events or teams is a particularly good way to meet various members of the program.

General Information

Gyms

The Biomedical Engineering Department is affiliated with the Medical campus and the Homewood campus; therefore, BME students are allowed to use the athletic centers on both campuses for free. To get your gym membership, you need to go to each gym and sign up at the beginning of each academic year. Our department funds a lot of our sports teams in the intramural leagues; the information for each team is featured in the list below. You can look up any of the captains on JHED, the directory, and email them for more information.

Pick-Up Games

There are a few loosely organized pick-up games around campus, too.
  • Soccer (usually indoors at the Cooley Center): Request to join the Mailing List
  • Basketball (usually at the Homewood gym): Wednesday nights (or contact John Issa)

Where to Go Running

There are several trails around the Homewood campus. You can also go running along a trail like the NCR Trail or Oregon Ridge State Park, which are outside the city. Most students living around Fells Point or Canton run around the Inner Harbor, where a "Promenade" path takes you around the water. Many people often run from Homewood to the Inner Harbor, a round trip distance of about six miles.

If you're more hard-core, or if you're looking for people to run with, you can check out a few running clubs:
  • Baltimore Running hosts several events in Baltimore City, and is mostly sponsored by Falls Road Running shop; their website lists several running groups and upcoming races.
  • The Howard County Striders are located in Columbia, MD, and organize weekly races (with 50-cent entry fee), coach middle school running, run several programs from trail-running to FIT (Females In Training), and have a pretty competitive Racing Team.
  • Federal Hill Runners meets every Monday to run around the city.
  • The Baltimore Running Festival occurs every October; several students form relay teams or run the 5K, Half-Marathon, or Marathon.

Yearly Events

BME Turkey Bowl

Each year, the BME department hosts "The Turkey Bowl," in which students, faculty, post-docs, and anyone affiliated with the BME department can form a team to compete for "The Murray Bowl," affectionately named for one of our previous Department Directors, Dr. Murray Sachs. This tournament usually occurs in November, and features a double-loss knockout system, flag football, co-ed teams, and a delicious barbeque cookout. The official website is here: https://jshare.johnshopkins.edu/jissa1/turkey_bowl/
