Sports are a good way for many of our students to maintain a physical and mental balance. Participating in sporting events or teams is a particularly good way to meet various members of the program.
General InformationGymsThe Biomedical Engineering Department is affiliated with the Medical campus and the Homewood campus; therefore, BME students are allowed to use the athletic centers on both campuses for free. To get your gym membership, you need to go to each gym and sign up at the beginning of each academic year.
Pick-Up GamesThere are a few loosely organized pick-up games around campus, too.
Where to Go RunningThere are several trails around the Homewood campus. You can also go running along a trail like the NCR Trail or Oregon Ridge State Park, which are outside the city. Most students living around Fells Point or Canton run around the Inner Harbor, where a "Promenade" path takes you around the water. Many people often run from Homewood to the Inner Harbor, a round trip distance of about six miles. If you're more hard-core, or if you're looking for people to run with, you can check out a few running clubs:
Yearly EventsBME Turkey BowlEach year, the BME department hosts "The Turkey Bowl," in which students, faculty, post-docs, and anyone affiliated with the BME department can form a team to compete for "The Murray Bowl," affectionately named for one of our previous Department Directors, Dr. Murray Sachs. This tournament usually occurs in November, and features a double-loss knockout system, flag football, co-ed teams, and a delicious barbeque cookout.
