Proposed PhD council events for 2009-2010
I. Seminars (FSSHH)FSSHH is a regularly scheduled seminar series for Johns Hopkins BME grad students and other interested students that includes a seminar talk, happy hour refreshments (beer, soda appetizers), and fun social interactions.II. PhD Council Meetings - 6 per yearAny PhD students are invited to attend and voice their opinion.III. First Year / Senior SocialsThis past year, there was a single event, a harbor cruise. This was planned by a first year student, and all PhD students were invited. In previous years, the department has sponsored dinners between the 1st year class and each of the more senior classes to promote inter-class solidarity and so that the new students have an early opportunity to meet the elder year students. These events also allow the incoming class to talk with older students to facilitate the selection of a research lab. In the FY09-10, we propose that the 1st year students will have the opportunity to plan one or two events of their choice. This could be dinner format, or other event such as the cruise that allow more active participation than a sit-down dinnerIV. BME Social EventsOrientation BBQThis BBQ takes place on the afternoon of new student orientation. It is meant to give the incoming 1st year PhD students their first chance to meet the existing students. For the past two years, it has been held on lawn outside of Clark Hall.BME Summer PicnicThe BME Summer Picnic typically takes place in July and is organized by the 1st year students. In past few years, it has been held at Gunpowder State Park.BME Halloween PartyThe BME Halloween Party is organized by the students and held at a student’s house.BME Turkey BowlThe BME Turkey Bowl is a coed flag football tournament and BBQ that is held the weekend before Thanksgiving. It is an all day event that begins at 10:00 am and ends around 7:00 pm. It has been organized the past 3 years in conjunction with the ChemBE department by Kelvin Liu and Elias Issa. Each year 8-10 teams of 10 players each play in the tournament with an additional 20-40 spectators. The total attendance each year is around 120 people.Rafting / CampingHannah Carter has organized a rafting trip the past two years. SUPER fun. Department would subsidize trip based on the number of students interested in attending.Miscellaneous BBQ - 1 x $200 = $200This is a miscellaneous BBQ that is planned during the year. It has typically occurred at a student’s house. The budget covers food, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.TO BE DETERMINED EVENTS:We welcome new ideas, and want people to organize more events!!!Email lukejohnson07 AT gmail.com if you are interested in organizing an event!
