Prospective Students: What to Think About When Moving to Baltimore

Taxes
  • If you're a BME PhD student, then, in your first year or two of grad school, the department will pay for you. This counts as Fellowship money, and there's no automatic tax withholding. You'll have to pay estimated taxes on it to the Federal Government (1040ES) and to your state of residence. Each quarter (4/15, 6/15, 9/15, 1/15), you have to fill out a voucher and pay estimated taxes based on your yearly income.
  • After you join a lab, you become a part of your advisor's payroll. If Hopkins issues you a W2, then Hopkins will withhold both Federal and Maryland taxes from your salary. If you're not a Maryland Resident, then you can file a MD tax return in order to get your money back. You still have to pay estimated taxes in your state of residence.
  • The GSA has a few links that are useful for students:

Where to Live
  • Refer to the many neighborhoods above, and/or the forums. Several grad students are probably looking for roommates. You might also be able to contact a few grad students (like Issel and Vas) for advice on where to live, what how much rent is, and what a particular area is like.
  • What to consider when you're looking for a place to live:
    • Rent: Is it in your price range? Ask about student discounts. Some places will also pay for your utilities.
    • Parking: Do you want to keep your car in a covered garage, or are you fine w/ on-street parking? How will you get to campus?
    • Washer/Dryer: Some buildings have a laundry room in the basement. Some apartments have W/D in the units themselves. Some have nothing at all. Make sure you know what you're getting into.
    • Roommates: Do you want a 1BR or 3BR? How about sharing a bathroom? Ask your fellow classmates about splitting rent for an apartment.
  • Many BME students live around Charles Village, in The Broadview, Hopkins House, Uni One, The Marylander, Cresmont Lofts, and townhouses in that area. Some students live in Fells Point, Canton, or the Inner Harbor, especially if they work on the JHMI campus. If you're interested in a particular area, please email the webmaster (Issel), and she can recommend whom to ask about which places.
Hopkins Tips
  • Parking: Grad students get free parking in any garage on the JHMI campus after 430p. There's also a free satellite parking lot. If you want parking in a garage (and there's probably space in the Kennedy Krieger Garage, which is across the street from Traylor and near Broadway Research Building), then you pay $50/month. Other parking rates are available on Homewood campus. If you TA, then you get a free parking pass in the South Garage (the new Mason Hall building underground garage). Ask Gayle in the Clark Hall BME Office about those parking passes.
  • Food: Near Homewood, there are plenty of restaurants on St. Paul Street (Chipotle's, Sam's Bagels, etc), and some dining halls on campus (Levering Hall has a cafeteria and a coffeeshop). At JHMI, there are plenty of food carts. You can also eat at Burger King, ABC Sushi, Taste of China, or plenty of booths at The Market.
  • Groceries: Near Homewood, there's a Safeway on the corner of 25th and St. Paul. There's also a Giant on 33rd. Downtown, there's a Safeway on Boston St., and a Whole Foods near Aliceanna and S. President St.

Travel: Directions, Maps, Transportation

Directions
Public Transportation
  • The Maryland Transit Administration has several options for public transportation. Some of the easiest travel options include:
    • Metro/Subway: The final south-bound stop is Johns Hopkins Hospital. This map, showing the route from Owings Mills through the Inner Harbor/Downtown Baltimore to JHMI, will show you the schedule and route of the Metro. Once you arrive at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, you can ask the Security Desk how to get to the Kennedy Krieger Institute.
    • MARC: Only running from Mondays to Fridays, this train has several stops around Washington, DC, and comes directly to Baltimore's Penn Station in the Mt. Vernon neighborhood. The JHMI Shuttle Service stops by Penn Station on its way between the campuses.
    • Lightrail: Operating at street-level, alongside cars and across bridges, the Light Rail's stops include BWI Airport, the Baltimore Convention Center, and shopping centers in Baltimore County.
    • Bus: The local, express, and neighborhood buslines have many different routes.
  • Map from the MTA: This map displays the MARC, Metro, and Light Rail routes with connecting stops.
