Volunteering
The BME Department encourages students to participate in community service
programs. Biomedical engineering students have started two different
volunteering programs that involve Baltimore county and city school systems.
Dunbar Incentive Mentoring Program:
The Incentive Mentoring Program fosters the academic and personal
growth of students at Dunbar High School. Volunteers provide after-school
tutoring for the students and, in turn, the students design and participate
in monthly community service projects to benefit others. In addition, there
are quarterly field trips to build a sense of teamwork and camaraderie. IMP
meets every Monday and Tuesday from 3:15pm - 6pm in the Dunbar High School
library. Dinner is provided for the students and volunteers.

Baltimore County Math League:
The goal of the Baltimore County Math League initiative, spearheaded
by Raymond Cheong and Jun-Kyu Rhee, is to bring the experience of in-person
math contests to Baltimore County high school students. Such experiences
often have a strong positive influence on students by improving math skills,
encouraging future pursuit of technical careers, and providing a feeling of
belonging through peer interaction. This academic year, the initiative has
teamed with the Baltimore County public school system to fund, assemble, and
send an all-county team to the American Regions Math League (ARML) contest
in June 2006. In 2006-2007, we will establish a league of 3-5 schools and
hold 4-8 meets, as well as continue the all-county ARML team. Through these
efforts, we hope to set a foundation for a Baltimore County Math League that
will thrive for years to come.
